ARTIST STATEMENT
Character Study:
My piece depicts an upset baby whose crying tears and have big bushy eyebrows. I used the element, value, to create the principle, contrast. The meaning/message of my piece is to show that seeing a baby cry can be disheartening. This piece is unsuccessful because I didn't add enough contrast to my final piece.
My inspiration for this piece is comes from the movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs", Flint's father Tim Lockwood (owner of a tackle shop in Swallow Falls) had a big bushy unibrow. I remembered this and thought it would've been funny to add big bushy eyebrows to a baby.
The process of when creating this piece when I was referring to myself one of my assignments I had, where one of my characters have big bushy eyebrows, and the movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs".
Surface Manipulation
My piece depicts hiding behind a mask, covering something you hate. Tools, techniques, and process I used was cardboard paper, newspaper, paint, and markers. I added layer after layer of paint to get the skin tone just right.
My inspiration was that making the right part with paint( to appear smooth and flowing). And the left part with newspaper( to stand out).
My goal for this piece was to make it stand out and make the message more clear.
My thoughts on my work was successful, but not as I hoped it to be.
Clay:
This piece used to depict the head of a mammoth-like creature, Gammoth, with the tusks and trunk curving upward(but now its just a simple pot). The 1st piece has textures all over it to represent the fur with a few examples(the ivory parts such as the tusks and the head plate, which serves as armor). The newer one just has smoothness and random swirls. I used the elements, form and texture, to create the principles, emphasis and proportion.
The meaning of this piece is pretty much non-existent this point since originally I thought we're going to make clay figures, which the meaning of that figure was going to be was strength and hardiness. This piece was unsuccessful because not only it isn't what I envisioned to be, the 1st piece broke apart(in which I failed to put back together) and now its just a pot. My inspiration for this piece comes from a youtube video I watched which was a guy who made clay figure of Lagiacrus, a monster whose appearance is similar to crocodiles and alligators. He also made a smaller clay figure of Chameleos, a chameleon-like monster.
My process was at first, brainstorming ideas for making Chameleos, but soon shifted my focus onto Gammoth. But later, since the project wasn't about making clay figures, I redesigned my idea into a coat hanger(since the Gammoth's head has tusks and trunks). I redesigned my project into a clay pot since the coat hanger was no longer possible. My goal is to finished my piece as soon as possible so I can get it over with. Quite a sad path my process gone through, an epic clay figure to an insignificant clay pot.
What I've learned while doing this project is that while you make one small mistake while making something with clay, you'll pay a hefty price later on(like me and my coat hanger...). But also I learned to slip and score pieces of clay together even though I'm not the best at it. The most interesting thing I learned that if your piece has undetected air pocket somewhere, it'll blow up in the kiln. That would be so epic and awesome to see, but it'll also be quite tragic and disheartening. I have my hopes for the next project I'm going to do next, which fits very well in my territory.
Performance Piece:
This piece depicts a nightmarish animatronic, whom which it’s entire “suit” it wears is covered and stained with blood. The complementing green background has zectangle designs drawn on it. I used line, color, shape, space, and texture to create contrast, emphasis, and rhythm. The meaning of this piece is that to represent the artistic frustration I had while making. I’m not quite sure what to feel about this piece since it isn’t what I envisioned it to be, but I managed to put it together before the due date.
The process started out with me sketching out for a scary concept. I did this before switching over to a superstition concept, sketching out what was basically an eastern dragon. I completed that and started on a painting of that sketch. Later, I wasn’t satisfied with it and started over. I attempted several times over a weekend and I still wasn’t satisfied where they were going. On the last attempt, I decided to use a incomplete drawing I did the previous year and managed to complete my performance piece.
Master's Style
This piece depicts justified anger and hatred. I used elements to create principles. The meaning/message of this piece is anger and hatred towards those who does good deeds for selfish reasons. This piece is unsuccessful because despite the painting being well done over all, I didn't have it the way I wanted to and couldn't get the shading quite right.
My inspiration for this piece comes from the anime show "My Hero Academia". The process was that I wanted to do something cartoonish, but also something that was serious. So I picked Stain, from "My Hero Academia, who was cartoonish and filled with intense anger and hatred.
Pen & Ink:
My piece depicts a open mouth inside in a heart with blood flowing out of the mouth, and a knife stabbing through the heart. In the background is ruined and abandoned ruins. I used lines and texture to create movement, contrast, and emphasis in this piece.
The meaning of this piece is starvation and cannibalism. Where the heart represents as the organ with the biggest resource of energy/protein in the body, and the mouth represents the cannibalization of the body eating itself(especially the heart. But this could also refer to a survivor slowly succumbing to a virus in a zombie apocalypse.
This piece is successful because I managed to draw out the idea I had for this piece.
My inspiration for my piece comes from one of classwork, and the book series "Cirque Du Freak. The process involved at first the 2000 Godzilla, then a eye with a mouth in it, then a balloon with a mouth in it, and then the heart.
Foreshortening:
This piece depicts Mr. Fear, my original character, standing on earth with various buildings and creatures behind him. I used lines, shape, texture, and space to create contrast, variety, and emphasis. The meaning of this is that to represent Mr. Fear’s power and control over humanity on earth, and show that he appears to be a “evil businessman”. I feel like this piece is unsuccessful because I feel like I could’ve done better on the shading, contrast, and composition of the piece.
My inspiration for this piece was from one of my other original characters, SS12 Musami(whose was sort of a super soldier with no past).
The process started out with sketching an armored knight whom has a persona of a video game bruiser. Then I decided this guy didn’t look scary enough, so I sketched a demon warrior. Next, I thought to myself that demons and businessmen are often associated with making deals, so I sketched the demon warrior as a demon businessman instead.
Art Show Piece:
My inspiration for this piece was my foreshortening piece 'Mr. Fear'. The process was that it originally started out requiring only one piece of paper and the rule of thirds. I was going to have the piece to open up to reveal another part of the piece. I used three pieces of paper instead one, and putted the parts on each piece of paper in chronological order.
This piece depicts two skull-headed figures and a crying figure(with something evil behind it). The first skull-headed figure is "crying" blood and was questioning either to himself or someone that's out of reach. The crying figure is crying tears and begging someone to save him with a malevolent presence right behind. The second skull-headed figure appeared to be enraged and planning to revenge on his wrongdoer. I used color, line, shape, space, texture, and value to create emphasis, balance, and unity. I used complementary colors to provide emphasis. I used different colors and blended them to provide value in space. I used line to provide shapes and texture.
The basic meaning/message of this piece is that to die a hero or live long enough to become the villain. This original character(OC) I made is named "Mr. Fear", which happened after he fell into his villainous status. In his story, someone took away everything he loved and knew which caused him fall into a depression. Over time his negativity manifested into a malice-like being and was slowly corrupting him. Then he decided it was time to take revenge and that's when he became Mr. Fear.
This piece was unsuccessful in that it could've been better. The blending and the lines are rather more sloppy than I anticipated. A better usage of color placement and what kind of colors I used would've made the piece much better.
